Helping Teens Build Confidence and Friendships: The Social Skills Group for Adolescents

Social skills are essential for adolescents, but how do we help them to develop these skills? It’s a question many parents ask themselves as they strive to raise healthy and happy children.

That’s why the Family Psychology Place is offering a social skills group for adolescents — an in-depth course designed to help Calgary youth build their confidence, social skills, and resilience in a safe and welcoming place.

Running from March 1 to May 5, 2025, this program aims to provide meaningful experiences that go beyond the group and into participant’s homes and social spaces. Our goal is to help your child thrive and flourish socially and emotionally.

What This Course is About

During this 8-week course, we provide teens and their families with an opportunity to observe and practice social skills while receiving feedback from skilled group facilitators. Through engaging interactions, we’ll guide your teen as they build effective communication that fosters growth and development through evidence-based intervention.

With the support of their parents, adolescents will learn how to:

  • Use appropriate conversation skills
  • Employ humour effectively
  • Utilize electronic communication
  • Enter and exit conversations
  • Be a good sport
  • Handle arguments and disagreements
  • Change bad reputations
  • Manage rumours, gossip, rejection, teasing, and bullying effectively

Eligibility

The social skills group for adolescents is designed for teens aged 13 to 16 to help them develop the skills to make and keep friends. Teens and families who are interested in the group will need to participate in a pre-screening interview, unless they have recently had a psychoeducational assessment or are referred by a clinician.

For best results, adolescents should be interested in attending voluntarily and willing to work collaboratively with their parents.
