We help individuals and families live happy lives by providing the tools to handle mental distress. Our psychologists have a variety of accreditations to help treat your specific problem.
Psychoeducational Assessment
Do you need a psychoeducation assessment? Let us aid you in getting a grasp on your learning process so you can excel in school and life.
We thoroughly assess your learning skills through a series of psychometric testing. What does this mean? Our psychologists evaluate you through a series of tests that assess your reasoning, academic, executive functioning, memory, intellectual ability, and attention skills. Understanding this information allows us to see where you have learning difficulties so we can help you overcome certain educational challenges.
How do you know if you might need a psychoeducational assessment?
- Loss of interest in school
- Consistent complaints about workload
- A disconnect between your potential and performance
- Struggles to stay focused
Often, children in need of a psychoeducational assessment might cry over homework, ask for repetition of what was already learned, or show signs of low self-esteem. Adults might discover they had learning disabilities as a child and decide to investigate their current learning style. Getting help to overcome learning challenges as an adult sometimes requires encouragement to take that extra step. It is important to encourage your loved ones to seek out a psychologist who can help.
Everyone learns at their own pace and at The Family Psychology Place, we teach you to learn differently. You are your own person, so we come up with ways to help you understand in a way that works with your brain.
Learning Disabilities/Disorders
What is a learning disability/disorder? An area of weakness or inefficiency in your brain function causing difficulty with learning.
We have a full spectrum of assessments available for each type of learning disability/disorder, but here are some common ones we use:
- Intelligence/IQ Tests: Tests that help us discover your strengths and weaknesses, so you can get specific support where needed.
- Achievement Tests: Tests that focus on writing, reading, and math so we can help you catch up in these zones. Visual-Motor Integration Test: A test used to see if your brain is correctly connecting your visual cues to motor coordination. Language Test: A language test to understand your ability to speak, write, and respond to verbal cues and questions.
You know your child better than anyone. If you believe there is a problem, come get an assessment from us. If your child doesn’t need help, then you can breathe a sigh of relief and go home. If a learning disability/disorder is discovered, then you can take comfort knowing we have the tools to help. Children develop at different stages. If you think your child is developing slowly compared to their peers, this may be a sign of a learning disability/disorder.
Ask yourself if you have struggled with focus or certain tasks your whole life. If you discover that the answer is yes, then you might have a learning disability/disorder. We can help you work with these difficulties for a smoother life.
You are intelligent; you just need help figuring out how to maneuver through your concerns. Our psychologists are here for you every step of the way.
Giftedness
Are you an imaginative person? Do you have a strong ability to retain information? Do you learn new skills easily and quickly? You might be gifted. Our psychologists want to help you reach your full capabilities. Start allowing your brain to explore its capabilities. First, let us help you discover if you truly have giftedness through some tests.
Giftedness Assessments
- Intelligence/IQ Tests: Tests that measure your logical reasoning, language expression and comprehension, general knowledge, and understanding of concepts.
- Achievement Tests: Tests that might be done along with an IQ test, but compare your performance with “typical” others.
If your child is gifted, they might think quickly, enjoy alone time, or relate well to older children and adults. Giftedness in adults is often exhibited through perfectionism, an inability to switch off their thoughts, being introverted, and harsh self-critics.
Do you believe your child might be gifted and want to get them into specific academic programs or a school for giftedness? Our team at The Family Psychology Place is able to provide your little one with an assessment for giftedness. This assessment will help you determine if this is the right option for you and your child. Our goal is to help each individual thrive in an environment that will nurture their individual skills.
Cognitive/Intellectual Abilities
Cognitive/intellectual abilities are needed for education, work, and social interactions. They are the abilities to reason, plan, problem-solve, comprehend, learn from experience, and think abstractly.
Cognitive disabilities are difficulties and deficits with learning and adapting involving everything from problem solving to verbal and visual comprehension. Intellectual disabilities are a group of disorders making it hard for you to adapt and develop cognitive abilities.
Testing cognitive/intellectual abilities will allow you to discover if you have any deficiencies so these can be aided.
One way that can help us discover if you have cognitive/intellectual deficiencies:
- Intelligence/IQ Tests: Tests that assess your memory, problem-solving, spatial ability, visual-motor skills, mathematic reasoning, and language development.
Children with cognitive deficits have a hard time coping with the changes that occur as a result of puberty. These children might become more aggressive or oppositional. Adults can have a hard time preparing food, cultivating interests, and managing finances if they have cognitive impairment.
In adults and seniors, cognitive testing can help determine the presence of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Our psychologists want to help you avoid the negative reactions that come with cognitive/intellectual issues. We will do all we can to help improve your life so you can function at your best possible level.
If you let our psychologists discover more about you, you will learn about yourself and increase your ability to help yourself overcome your concerns.
